Kickstarter Officially Opens in Canada

Image
People based in Canada can now build Kickstarter projects, the crowdfunding platform announced Monday. Excited to announce that Canada-based creators can start building projects right now! http://t.co/c8SDQSVAzS — Kickstarter (@kickstarter) August 5, 2013 To begin, Canadian users must click on the site's "Start a new project" button and select "Canada," according to a blog post . Projects will open to the public starting Sept. 9. "We thought the month-long gap would give everyone plenty of time to build and tweak their projects before launching," the post said Canada-based Kickstarter projects will function in the exact same way as those in the U.S. and UK — including all-or-nothing funding and rewards — with one exception. Pledges will be processed through a third-party payments system, and backers of Canadian projects must enter their payment information directly on Kickstarter. Kodak Set to Declare Bankruptcy [REPORT]

Image
Kodak Set to Declare Bankruptcy [REPORT] : Eastman Kodak will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection over coming weeks unless it can sell its collection of digital patents, according to a report. The Wall Street Journal , citing “people familiar with the matter,” reports Kodak is in talks with lenders about $1 billion in funding that would keep the company afloat during bankruptcy proceedings. The bankruptcy could happen later this month or in February, according to the report. Kodak reps could not be reached for comment on the report. Declaring Chapter 11 wouldn’t cause Kodak to shut down. The company would continue to function as it attempted to sell its 1,100 patents through a court-supervised bankruptcy auction, according to the report. Kodak is attempting to sell the patents now to avoid the filing. Kodak’s fall from grace is a textbook example of a company that anticipated consumer trends but failed to act on them. The company claims to have invented the...

Blockbuster Movie Pass: Dish Network’s $10/Month Answer To Netflix

Image
Dish Network has the answer to Netflix: Blockbuster. The company bought the bankrupt Blockbuster six months ago at auction for $228 million and apparently wasted no time integrating Blockbuster’s current streaming service into Dish’s satellite TV plans. The Blockbuster Movie Pass is a complete media rental service and features streaming movies and TV shows along with movies and games-by-mail. But don’t cancel your Netflix streaming account just yet. This isn’t Blackbuster or Dish Network’s first foray with streaming video. The then-alive (but quickly sinking) Blockbuster launched On Demand back in 2008 complete with its on dedicated player . It’s still up and running and features a robust platform support second only to Netflix. Likewise, Dish Network has long offered on demand video content and was the first to offer 1080p videos. In fact the Blockbuster Movie Pass is a relaunch of existing Blockbuster products combined with on demand content from Dish Network. The Blockbu...

US DOJ Sues AT&T to Block T-Mobile Acquisition for Antitrust Issues

Image
The hammer has fallen. It looks like the US Department of Justice was not as easily swayed by AT&T. AT&T has been trying to argue how their acquisition of T-Mobile would help customers even though everybody knows that is more or less a joke. Bloomberg is reporting that the Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against AT&T in Washington federal court saying that AT&T’s takeover of T-Mobile would violate antitrust law. Here is the gist: “AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market” Say it aint so! AT&T’s shares are crashing on the news especially since AT&T would have to pay T-Mobile $3 billion cash and $4 billion in deals if the acquisition falls through. Let us know what side you are on?
